I just bought a new starter on a 89 rude! She was always a cranky start. The new starter turned it right over in my driveway three different times today. I bring her to the lake, then nothing. The starter would spin but not lift up why?

Yeah i noticed on the solenoid the positive conection had a maple-syrup like goo on it. Could that be the problem? should i clean all those conection with like 200 grit sandpaper? Battery is brand new! thanks btw

Yes. You seem to have fixed a starter that wasn't broke. :(

Take both battery cables loose at both ends and clean carefully. While you have them off inspect them carefully for swollen or weak spots. If they are not perfect, replace them.

Add cleaning battery/starter cable connections to your annual routine maintenance list.

yeah story of my life. One other quick question, many of the older posts that I have read and were related mention being able to pull up on the starter, towards the flywheel and hit it with 3-1 oil. I can't lift mine manually is it defective? Its brand new.

cleaned all the terminals and they were dirty especially at the selonoid, but the same issue. Then i manually lifted the starter towards the flywheel once, and viola, started every time. Again this is a new starter do should I have to lube it?
