I tinkered around some more and did notice that the gears do not line up properly so at certain points it will not do anything when I turn the key...and I am unable to turn the flywheel at all even with the plugs out. I removed the starter and the flywheel turns fine. So I am guessing there is a bind somehow...and now I CANNOT get the bendix gear to lower on the new starter even with the starter off the motor...it's just stuck there.

Given the teeth on my old starter being so chewed up..and the body of the old starter having machined indents around the bolt holes..does this sound like a misalignment issue?

If so how the heck do I figure this one out?...lol I have searched a bit but can;t really find a straight forward answer on this.

Thanks.

It's normal for the gear to remain stuck at the top of the shaft, if removed from the starter that way. It takes the spinning flywheel to provide the centrifugal force to kick it back down the shaft. (Shop I used to take mine to had a device to replicate the spinning flywheel.) Good that the flywheel is free and smooth. If I understand your description when plugs removed and starter engaged, the gears aren't meshing. Make sure the Ebay seller has your model number. See that #8 post again (Racerone). Make sure the seller knows exactly what motor you have.

Have the battery load tested
.

I've seen them bad from new.

New solenoid? if so, is it the correct one?

Grab your flywheel and try to shake it, see if it has any sideways/lengthwise play.
It should have none to only a very tiny amount. I think i normally find a bit of port to starboard play for some reason and not front to back.
If there isnt much play, it sounds like your starter is the wrong one or your flywheel isnt the right one(unlikely)

Starter update: The Ebay seller said the starter was the right one..it's just got the different type of gear clutch but told me to send this one back and they will send me a new one anyway since the clutch thing shouldn't spin freely and I cannot get the bendix gear down.

I am thinking I may as well by a new solenoid at this point..heck almost everything external on the motor will be newly replaced besides the flywheel after that...lol

Load test: Since my old starter is in pieces and the new one is boxed up ready to be sent back I will take my battery in to the parts store to see if they will do a proper load test in next day or so.

I also ordered another used starter that looks exactly like my old one and was said to be fine...I feel better trying to troubleshoot this with an original OEM type part anyway and if it works then I will have a spare when the new one comes I guess.

Flywheel play...I just went out and tried moving the flywheel from right to left front to back..has very little if any play at all.

I am still wondering what would have caused the old starters teeth to be so eaten up..but maybe that just happens over thirty or so years.

Guess I am stuck now until one of the starters get here.

Thank you all and I will update when I have more info.

I just put a battery into my diesel farm pickup or my Massey ferg 35 tractor. If it can start either of them theres no need i find to pay the cost to get to a store to test it, and i dont have the store owner around saying it should be replaced
