Starter Kicks out after one revolution of motor

I have posted a few times recently trying to diagnose an intermittent warm starting problem.

2001 Johnson 90 hp V4

This post is specifically about the starter.

Most of the time when I am having the warm starting issue the starter will crank the motor one revolution and kick out.

I realize that the starter is supposed to kick out when it thinks the motor is starting, but should it kick out this easy? Time after time.

Or is it just a symptom?

On my old boat (1995 40 hp merc), the starter would just crank until the motor started whether it was 2 seconds or 20 seconds. There was no cutting out.

The motor starts OK when cold and runs fairly well once started.

Try cleaning your battery cables on both ends until they are shiny. If that doesn't improve things see if they are building up any heat, they can look great on the outside and be in terrible shape on the inside. You can also try to use jumper cables directly to the starter solinoid and motor block to see if it spins faster and more completely. After that you may want to look at the solinoid or starter.

It's not the starter -- it's the engine.

The bendix is on a threaded shaft, and when the motor starts, it turns faster than the starter shaft, which screws it back down.

One cylinder fires, it's enough to kick the bendix back down but if the next cylinder misfires, the engine doesn't start.

Warm, it should start within one revolution anyway. See if lifting the hi-idle lever makes it start quicker.

Time to do some basic troubleshooting.

99%, bad connection , bad starter, bad battery. What is the voltage across the battery. This is a poor test , but how much? 12.25, 50%
