Starter, maybe?

Hi all,<br /><br />We tried to take out our 73 Glastron Sunday, got it to the water and when we turned the key, all we could get out of it was a click. Would not even make the engine begin to think about turning over. The battery is good, I think it is a month old. Plus, every thing else electrical runs fine, i.e. tilt & trim, blower, pump, etc... So, it seems to me, that the flow of electricity is stopping at the starter. (we also tried to jump start it, to no avail)Is there anything else on the motor that I should be looking at besides the starter?? <br /><br />It is a 1973 Volvo 170.....<br /><br />Thanks !!!

It may be the starter solenoid is bad. If you are getting 12V to the small Ivory colored wire on the starter and the starter is not engaging, just clicking, remove the starter and have it checked out.<br />Make sure all of your Positive and Negative battery cables are clean and tight.<br />Also make sure you can turn the engine by hand. If you "Click" is more of a hard "CLUNK", the engine may be locked up for some reason.

There is no "clunk" just a "click" and it only clicks once when you engage the key. I did not realize that I could pull the starter off and have it checked out as opposed to hauling the whole vessel to the shop.<br /><br /><br />Thanks

you can take the boat to the shop and let them do the work, but if you have some mechanic skills, you can remove the starter and solenoid and see if there is a business in your area that reworks just these items, usually in with alternator refurbishing. this will save you some $$. starter brushes will wear down and starters can get cruded up. solenoids can fail due to corrosion and wear also. if you decide to do it yourself, make a drawing of where the wires go.

Your Problem Could be as Simple as Dirty Connections.......<br />Either at the Battery, Or the Starter.......<br /><br />Just Unhooking, Cleaning,+ Reinstalling the Wiring will sometimes Fix a problem like yours.......<br /><br />Diagnoising the issue with a Multimeter, or Testlight will save Time,+ Money on Unneeded parts.......<br />

That statement leads Me to believe that You might save Money in the long run, Paying a Wrench to do it for you...........<br /><br />Good Luck.........
