Starter motor electrical problems

Hello.
I have just changed my brushes on the starter motor.
have changed them just the way the old one was. i measured continuity between plus brushes and the base no contact there. i did the same with negative.
and it is contact negative to the base.

checked the commentator and the side of the motor for shorts. but nothing found.
i sanded down the commentator and cleaned up the lines between the "cake slots" with a paper clip.

when i assembled the hole thing. i get continuity between the + and negative on the starter.
is this normal?

Very good work.-----That is all normal.----Most folks refuse to believe how simple it is to do this work.

If the permanent magnets are still good (and they usually are) and the armature windings as well, then usually brushes and bearings and a little clean up effort is all it takes to rebuild one back to working condition again. Easy peasy!

the problem is that when i turn my key. the + on the starter is sparking, and then noting. the motor wont turn. so i think there is some thing wrong. any ideas?

Yes. but i dont think i explained my self properly.

the finished refurbished starter. when i take my multimeter on continuity(BEEP when you touch the two probes together)

from + brushes to the metall base there is no short no beep
from the - brushes to the base there is a short and the i hear the beep. but this is normal since it is ground.

If i take the red one on the + on starter, and the black on the - on the starter i hear a beep from the multimeter and i get a reading of 01.0 should this shot out?????


the starter is mounted in the same way i took it apart. yes i have mounted the rubber gasket and washer

The insulation on the positive brushes can slide out of position.----And is it possible that + leads are pinched ??------- mean these starters are so easy, easy to work on !!

All your tests sound like the starter is good. They normally have very low (but some) resistance since they need to carry 150A+ at less than 12VDC, when cranking the motor.

However, it is hard to test individual windings for continuity, as they can short to one another. Also there is a high current test for starters that cannot be done with a multimeter. If you do not figure it out, maybe a trip to an electric motor shop is in order.

:doh::doh::doh::doh::doh::doh::doh::doh: I think i know what the problem is. So embarrassed. I forgot to reconnect the negative cable from the battery. it shares the same ground point as the starter motor.
