I am having problems getting the top gear on the starter motor to push up and engage on the big fly wheel gear to start the motor. I can crank it up manually and then it will start it. But on a cold start it just stays down and spins. Once it warms up, it usually will engage though. I am I just dealing with a grease problem? 1991 Johnson 90 horse.

Try a little WD-40 on the shaft at the gear. If that doesn't do it, remove the gear and clean the shaft, then oil again. Make sure your battery connections are all good and clean from the battery all the way to the starter, including the ground...and of course, make sure the battery is fully charged...

Rick-Battery is fully charged. Tried a tad of WD40, not much though. As far as dissasembling the gear. Do I just remove the top of the starter to do so? Thanks Jamie

I'll bet that while the battery is fully charged that either the terminals or the cable ends are dirty. If not that check the cable as corrosion in the cable itself will result in high resistance.

Im not sure, about inside the rubber but outside cables are very clean. Keep in mind that the starter is working and the little gear is spinning like mad it is just not pushing up to the fly wheel.
