starter motor seized evinrude ficht ram 150 ( year 2000)

hey gents !

unfortunetly my season begins bad- my starter motor is seized up. it takes the current but it does not turn over and is not turnable by hand.

does anybody had dismantled / rebuild such a think or is the only way to buy a new one ? unfortunetly pats for the fichts in europe are very expensive and rare to get...

Try taking it apart yourself. It may be something you can easely repair. You got nothing to lose.

ok...i took it apart and truly unzeized it. the reason for the seizing was a stunning amount of dirt from the brushes and - dont ask me how - something like fine sand between the stator and the rotor .. since the brushes seem to be fine i guess the preowner of the boat changed the brushes some time ago. the upper bearing is ok ( the only bearing, the lower is just the rotor bolt which goes in the lower casing ) .

i cleaned carefully and greased all turning parts. the starter spins again by hand , but i,m skeptic if it will really be that simple- i will try tomorrow and let you know !
one more question- the starter incorporates only a + cable - where is the minus? the casing by itself ? the upper or the lower? the lower has a bolt for + so putting - on it would result in a short circuit or not? i would like to direct connect the starter removed to a battery

The bat + goes to the terminal on the starter. The - goes to the starter housing or the mounting bracket.

thanks boobie ! so putting from battery + on the terminal and - on the mounting bracket should let it spin ?

the funny thing is that is has two mounting brackets- the upper with two bolts going inside the flywheel and the lower with one bolt to the engine block where also the + terminal is located. its late- somehow i do not get how it can work- but it work(ed) !

like said just wont to check if it works now before installing it.

The outer casing of the starter mtr is the ground " -". Put in on and try it.

hey ! i installed the unzeised starter and it started the engine- 5 times. after this it quit work again :facepalm:

i had enough and ordered a new starter which was to my amazing available immediately. today i installed the new one and the engine starts like a champ- the old ones must have been weak for a longer time since the new turns the engine way faster that i ever saw on the old one. hopefully no more expensive surprizes in the future
