Hi there

I have a Evinrude 50 vro 85, which is being difficult to start. When I turn the key starter ony runs for about 2 secs and then stops for about 2 secs and this cycle is beeing repated. So it seems like som eliectrical error. I have tried new battery no result new starter no result. Have beeen trying whit cabels directly from battery to starter no result. I can easily rotate engine by one hand. If I connect my start booster everyting works just fine. Battery voltage 13.1 before start and goes all the way down to 9 V while starting. If I remove sparkplugs the starter manage to rotate engine around. Does anyone have any suggestions.

Best regards Marcus in sweden

Re: Starter only impulse runs

it sounds like a dirty connections, heating up and causing resistance and not enough power reaching the starter.

90% of starter problems are bad connections. remove and clean both ends of the battery cables, so that they are shiney, also the cable from the solenoid to starter. check for nicks in the cables. and make sure the connectors are on the wire good. the cable tend to corrode from the inside out, if nicked, corroded wires, and connections, heat up and cause resistance to the follow of electricity, thus the starter doesn't get enough. you can also take jumper cable pos battery post to large post on starter. with a good connection, the engine should spin. then if the starter is good clean everything and retest. then trouble shoot solenoid. starters can be rebuit at a starter/alternator shop, much cheaper than a new one.

also have the battery load tested at the auto parts store, free, i've had new batteries go bad

I agree entirely with the connections. Amazing how much can be lost due to it and a really cheap fix.

Re: Starter only impulse runs

Tnx for fast reply

I've tried with cabels only running starter after solenoid and the starter does not rotate. In one moment i crossed negative and positive battery cables and some smoke came out of the engine. Therefore i thought something melted in starter so i bought a new for 1600 swedish about 200 USD. But i do agree with you that it looks like a conectivity fault. But even how much I try to clean up conectors gives no result. So maybe i should try battery again. acid wheigt in battery is 1.3 if that is same scale in us as in europe. Powercords are 16 squaremm which would be 5/8 squareinch. It has worked before so wouldnt be a problem.

Re: Starter only impulse runs

Remove starter from motor.
Test with known good battery(car)
If ok - install and test with same battery
if ok-replace battery

Even brand new batteries can be defective (shelf time - shipping damage, etc.)

Re: Starter only impulse runs

A free running starter is no guarantee that it can deliver torque so that's only a partial test. The fact that the starter under load is drawing down the battery voltage to 9 volts is an indication of a bad battery. It should not drop that low. Have you cleaned and tightened both ends of the battery cables. If using jumper cables to connect directly to the starter is not working then still leaves, battery, starter, or a tight engine as the problem.
