HERE IS THE PROBLEM!! I WAS TESTING A FRIENDS BATTERY TO SEE IF IT HAD JUICE, SEEMS LIKE IT DID NOT, SO I SWITCHED BACK TO MY GOOD BATTERY, AT THAT POINT EVERYTHING WAS STILL DEAD. I FOUND THAT I HAD TO RESET THE BREAKER, SO I'M CONVINCED I MUST HAVE PUT THE WIRES ON THE WRONG TERMINALS, THAT OR THE OTHER BATTERY WAS THAT SHOT. EITHER WAY WHEN I TRY TO START IT NOW THE SOLENOID EITHER CLICKS OR DOES NOTHING, IF I TURN THE KEY SEVERAL TIMES FAST BACK IN FORTH IT WILL START, AT LEAST IT DID NOW IT DOES NOTHING. WHEN I HOOK UP 12 VOLTS DIRECTLY TO THE STARTER I GET A REACTION FROM THE STARTER EVERY TIME.

Double check all cables and wires for a tight connection. Tends to sound like a solenoid.

Another thing to check might be the ignition switch itself. Maybe some WD-40 might help.

What does "checked them" mean? Did you take them off and clean them?

Go to "Outboard Wont Start" in FAQ and do the tests for starter not turning.

Good luck. :)

Thanks for the help everyone!!
I checked that all the wires were tight and they were, I'll take all wires off and clean connections with sand paper and spray wd-40 in the switch. But I'm pretty sure now that I will have to find a solenoid.
Thanks again, keep your eyes for some more questions!!

Or shoot 12 Volts from another battery with jumper cables directy to the large terminal on the starter. If it cranks, replace selonoid. Force01 had it right, just a different way to do it.

Jumping 12 dirctly to the starter does not prove the solenoid bad.

Do the tests. Save yourself the embarrassment of replacing something that isn't broke.

Re: STARTER OR SOLENOID?? 1988 85 HP

Thanks every one,
Today I put a tester on the negative and the positive (battery side) of the solenoid and naturally I got 12v, When I moved the test wire from the batter side of the solenoid to the other side I got nothing which is normal cause the key was not being turned, WHEN I did turn the key again I got nothing. After about twenty fast turns only two time the starter would turn and at the same time I can see the fluke read 12v. So I'm now sure Its the solenoid. Thanks everyone. Keep a look out for some more questions.
this forum rules.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I still have to ask.....is the solenoid "clicking" everytime you turn the key???
If not, as JB said, the solenoid MAY NOT be your trouble....It could very well be in the switch.

Re: STARTER OR SOLENOID?? 1988 85 HP

To check the solenoid you need to
1. test the red battery wire terminal , it should have 12v or test light should burn
2. test the yellow wire from key switch, it should have 12v or test light should burn only when the key switch is held in the start position if not test key switch
3.test the starter wire, with key held on start position, 12v or light should burn,
4. test the solenoid to see it is grounded, it may have a black ground wire under aft screw in the suppot plate, clip test light to 12v power source & ground test light to solenoid support plate it should burn

Hope you can follow this method, good luck
