Starter part number?

I have a 1987 Evinrude 60hp with a weak starter. It just doesn't seem to have enuff ooomph to get the motor started. It was doing great until about a week ago, when I hit a log and stalled the motor. I went to restart it and it wouldn't start. Try it a few times no good. Pulled the motor cover off and noticed that the gear on the starter bendix (?) was lodged in under the flywheel and the starter was smoking. I unlodged it and crank it over again and it start (but seemed like it just barely had enough to get it). It died as soon as I backed the boat off the log (the motor hadn't been run much recently), and I haven't been able to get it started since. I'm 95% certain it's the starter... I'd say the smoke was a good indicator. I'm waiting on my service manual to get here, but having looked at it am positive I can replace the starter without it, I just don't know what part number I need to match my engine?? any help would be appreciated.

Thanks - hobiecat.

Also, I forgot to mention... last night when I was trying to start it, (like I stated above it didn't seem to have enough to get the motor) the starter didn't start smoking again or anything but the battery got pretty darn hot. Does this maybe indicate a short in the starter or something???

also, I forgot to mention... I had fully charged the battery a couple of days ago. Last night was the first time trying to start it on the new charge.

Re: Starter part number?

Remove, Check and clean all connections from the battery to the starter. This includes at the Battery, the engine, the selonoid, and the starter....

No problem. You want to eliminate all other possibilities before you buy, as that starter is about $150.00......

Besides cleaning the connections, and the starter, any other possibilities?? Like you said, I'd hate to drop $150 for the starter to find out that wasn't it.

Re: Starter part number?

Well, you could always jump 12 volts from the battery to the starter. If it turns it over normally, it's not the starter. If it still struggles, you can pretty much bet the starter is bad. This all assumes of course, that the engine turns over freely with no problems internally.
