Starter pinion gear.

I’m having starter problems and have eliminated every thing I can think of. 1988 75 p force.

Voltage drop test. Cleaned starter checked brushes. New solenoid. (separate issue). Battery.

The starter engages ok but does not stay engaged very long.

I checked the pinion gear by placing a spanner on the bottom nut and trying to turn the top gear section. I needed to use a pair of pliers but it was reasonably easy to turn the top section of the pinion separate to the bottom section. I am thinking the rubber inside has broken down.

Should I be able to move the two sections separately?

When I wind the gear up the thread on the starter it forces the bottom section up into the top and it grips a little better.

Thanks again for your help.

Re: Starter pinion gear.

The bendix can go bad.
Usually the bendix will just spin if it's bad.
If it's releasing early it a weak starter.
The bendix will engage and stay still and slip/turn inside the bendix.
I'd change the starter/bendix and then do as compression test.
Make sure all connections are tight and the cable is in good shape.
The starters on E-bay arent the best unless you get the high dollar ones.
The best part of these starters is the bendix.
Lots of people find the starters are no good right from the box.
