Hey All - Looking for suggestions.

need to lubricate my starter pinion and my operation manual calls for Lubriplate 777. I cannot find this product at any of my local marine shops. Spoke to one guy who said he uses a shot of WD 40. I have a 84 Evinrude 115 V4. Just looking for some suggestions.
Thanks

You need a thin grease that just stays on as grease, but not runs down as oil.
Normal Tripple Guard grease and similar gets to hard and may prevent the pinion movement. WD 40 works first time, then is gone.

I'll second that by Haffiman. The wd-40 and any other light oil drains off----usually into the starter where it can soften the brushes and leads to early failure of the starter.

That's a fairly common industrial lube. Look online, maybe Flea-bay. It'll be expensive and maybe hard to find just one tube, but one tube will last the life of the engine.

WD-40 shouldn't be used unless you are working on it or cleaning the old grease off. WD-40 also evaporates so it wont last. After I repaired mine I use syth. axle grease probably not the right stuff but is was what I had on hand and I haven't had any problems. Pretty sure the lube needs to be good quality like a syth or lithum that can handle the heat and the moisture associated with marine engines.

Bill- i hear you about the WD, too light for that i would just use OMC 6in1. Is that lithium grease too thick? I have triple guard, but the consistency is like lith grease very thick. did you just apply sparingly? What kind of motor are you running?

Yes I applied sparingly. I didn't use lithium grease, I used snythetic high temp grease thinly applied. It worked great since I had to tear it completely apart cleand and sand every contact clean and replace brushes. I'm running a '77 johnson 70hp. Figured I'd learn to fix the small easy stuff so I could keep it away from my boat man who is good and reasonable as long as you don't want it back anytime soon.
