So while trying to start the motor I look back and hear this pop as something comes flying off of the motor, upon further investigation the top of the starter that holds the spring and keeps the bendix from flying up and jamming had broken off. When i look at the starter shaft there is just a recessed ring for something to catch and the thing at the top that the spring goes into has an oring on one side but it is no longer good and i can get it put back together the way it looks like it should have been but it comes off the moment you bumb it and the bendix jams up in the flywheel. If anyone has dealt with this before and knows the procedure to fix it that would be great.

Thanks for looking sorry if it is a bit hard to understand, model number is 55783r the only differences for 55hp motors that year in model number was there was a 2 and 3 and an r and s i know mine is the 3r but I don't know the exact number.

My advice to you is that you should take the starter off and bring it to a service shop for a re-build, or, look around for another starter.

I found the ring that came out of it and got it fixed actually got the motor running now too, need to check the impeller though didn't have the pee stream like it should but after 5 min of running the head wasn't hot so it seems like the water is circulating, this was done on muffs in the yard. Does anyone know if that model put water out the prop or out the tell tale?
