i have a 2001 250 efi that i am having trouble with. boat ran fine last year and i did not do any work to it except to winterize. when i tried starting her up in the spring i thought my starter was bad. it would spin but not raise and engage the wheel. i had my batts tested and they are 100%. i replaced starter and the same thing happens with the new one. seems like boat will start initially but if i shut it down and try again the starter just spins. any suggestions what to try next?
thankx
tom

Re: starter problem?

t16j10,You have provided good things on both ends. The battery, and the starter.Your EFI Merc needs all the juice it can get.
Let's look between the battery and starter.
Clean the battery posts, reinstall the wires,as you clean them, and tighten wingnuts with pliers...TIGHT. (I use nuts w/star washers).
Folllow these cables to the motor, under the cowl.Where they connect, you may want to clean these surfaces as well.Continue to the solenoids and their connections.Clean them all.
I think this will get you closer to the solution.
DHP

I had the same problem. I was not getting enough amps to lift the bendix.{I don't know how to spell it}. The battery tested good. My wrench said it was the starter. The battery was three years old so I bought a new one to test the starter, It was the battery!! Showed the right volys but it would not put out the amps.
Dead Eye

Re: starter problem?

I believe an 800 cca battery is recommended to crank this engine. As others have suggested make sure all connections between the battery and the engine are clean and tight. Good luck. DH

I agree with DHPMarine.

I think 80-90% of the problems with starting that usually get new starters or new batteries simply need cable connections cleaned.

Good luck. :)
