Starter Problem?

I have a 95 force 40 horse, which runs spectacular once it is started.The problem is it has very low power when turned over. I have tried 3 batteries which all read fully charged before going in my boat, all 3 just barely fired it up after a number of tries. It will pull start o.k. and it always eventually starts for the time being, but something obviously is wrong. From other questions it looks like I should check the solenoid first and then the starter after cleaning all the connections. Can I be sure it's not binding because it's running fine after starting?<br />Thanks alot - ahead of time!!

Sounds like a good plan to me. Make sure you check all ground connections. And the battery cables themselves, they should be corrosion free, even check up under the insulation a little way.<br /><br />Whatever you do, DO NOT disconnect the battery from the engine while it is running.

I had a similar problem with my starter. It didn't get so bad that it wouldn't start the motor, but it was sounding very sick. I took the starter apart, replaced the brushes,cleaned & sanded the armature. Took about 10 min. & worked like a champ.

another thought to this...is the armature shaft straight?this is a symptom that could be caused by a bent shaft.did you run the starter till it got hot? may have melted the sodder at the bottom of the armature or melted the varnish which also causes a similer problem.if new brushes dont work i would take it to a rotary electric shop that works on marine motors as well and have them look at it. may just need tuneing.sounds odd but but its true i tell ya.

Eric G. could you tell us where you got your starter parts. I've got a Chrysler but, the force may be similar-I hope.

Tophue, Use carb cleaner and sand paper on all connections you'll be amazed. Ground to starter must be perfect . Clean Clean Clean
