:':)'( I was just wondering if anybody could help me with a issue that just poped up on my motor recently.
First off I have a 1984 Johnson 90hp, it has got to where sometimes when I go to start it it will just click, turn off the switch and try it again and it might click or it might turn over. Now here is where it gets tricky, today while at the lake the starter hung up and was continually running after the motor had started.Luckily it had dropped down low enough it wasnt still in the flywheel. It did this twice.I tapped on the solinoid on it quit.
I have already checked my batteries and they are charged good and all connections to my battery a clean and tight.
Any help will be greatly appriciated.::'(

Re: Starter problem????

sound like a bad solenoid. the solenoid controls the power to the starter.

Re: Starter problem????

Check your connections at the starter and also at the engine ground. Put a drop or two of oil on the starter shaft that the gear (Bendix) slides up on and see if that frees it up...

Re: Starter problem????

I had a mechanic tell me top check my main battery wires and see what kina shape they were in. I pulled them off tonight and they had a fair amount of green corrosion and you could tell they were in dire need of replacement.
Could this be the culprit of my problems??????????

Re: Starter problem????

it could, but that usually is a cause of not starting. but some time the low voltage could cause things to get hotter than normal and hang up. change you cables.

If you think the cables need to be replaced then do so, start with the cheapest fixes first. :/

Re: Starter problem????

As Tashasdaddy said-you have a bum solenoid. You might have other starter related problems also, but if the starter continued to spin after you released the key to the run position, and then you tapped the solenoid and the starter stopped turning-that means the solenoid was stuck in the activated position when it should have released. This solenoid is on about $25 I think. Invest in a new one.
