Hey guy's, I have a 2004 150 Merc Salt Water 2 stroke. It's been laid up for 7 months and now when I go to start it up the starter outside gear spins but doesn't pop up to the fly wheel and the dealer tells me I need a new one. I've tried tapping it lightly and using penatrating juice on the top, but it still won't pop up....Is it shot?

Re: Starter problem

Maybe not. One possible cause of that is a bad connection preventing the starter motor from accellerating hard enough to toss the Bendix gear up.

Remove and clean all connections of the big battery cables. That may not be the cause, but it is quick, easy and free.

Let us know the outcome.

Re: Starter problem

took the starter off and cleaned and lubbed the shaft, and tapped the gear a few times lightly with a small rubber malet, slapped that baby on and .....nothing, hit the key 2 or 3 times and bam! the sucker broke loose and popped up and my engine started! So today I replaced my stator, trigger, and regs and fixed the starter, I'd say I had a great day!
