Ok..I'm a rookie at this, so I'm still learning everything I need to learn about o/b motors.

Just want to see if I'm heading down the right path. My motor won't turn over when I hit the ignition switch. I hear a click when I turn it, but the starter doesn't engage the flywheel to crank it up. I'm assuming it's the starter, but before I remove it, I wanted to get everyone's advice.

If there is a switch or something that maybe I don't know about, that's what I'm wondering.

Thanks for any help provided.

The control handle must be in neutral for the motor to start. The click is the round solenoid switch mounted next to the starter. When you turn the key, the solenoid engages, completing the positive circuit from the battery to the starter.

Start out by checking all of the wiring that you can see running from the battery to the engine, then to the solenoid, then to the starter. Make sure that all of the connections are clean and tight.

check your battery cables , a small nick will allow moisture to get in cable, and the deteriorate from the inside. i chased a starting problem for 2 weeks, before i found the gas can had damaged the cable. your battery has to bew fully charged also. using jumper cables (just one side RED) hook to pos battery post and touch the red post on the battery. if starter spins motor then the problem is solenoid, key switch, on wiring. if it doesn't spin starter, get the auto parts store to load test the battery before you buy a starter. parts store will do this for free.

Originally posted by BigBrian:
Ok, I posted last saturday about my motor, I mistakenly identified it as a 1977 Evinrude. Anyways, I did all the things that you guys mentioned, and I appreciate the tips. Unfortunatly, none of them worked, so I ordered a new, replacement starter. I got it today and put it on and when I turn the ignition, all I hear is the click, but thats it, it doesn't engage the starter whatsoever. Is this the solinoid, or something else? Any help would be appreciated.
Brian, keep a single thread going ... way easier to help then.

What was the result of the jumper test? Does the starter spin? Does it engage the ring gear on the flywheel? When did it last start properly? What's the condition of the cables (both ground and hot)? Have you removed all connections + & - between the starter and battery and cleaned them?

Tell us what, specifically, what you've done. Sounds like you nbow have two fine starters.

Sorry about the two posts....I went through the cables and cleaned all the connections(or made sure they were clean) on Saturday. To be honest, I was really happy with the condition everything was in. I tried the positive to positive battery cable test, had the battery tested, everything.

The boat started fine about 2 months ago, since the rain hasn't been too plentiful, my options for getting on some of the lakes around here have been limited.

The starter doesn't spin, no engaging or anthing even remotly close to actually trying to crank.

I'm not too dissapointed in having the two starters, except for the $$$ part. The starter that I removed looked pretty old(i'm guessing it was rebuilt). Worst case scenerio, is that I have a back up starter if/when it goes out.

It should have started when you jumpered around the solenoid, and that would have told you it was the solenoid.
