My starter will spin and "pop" up, but not far enough to engage the flywheel, then makes a loud noise, but continues to spin. Im using a new battery, and connections are good. Why won't it fo up far enough? Thanks for the help.

Re: Starter problems.....

ok it's that time of year. little 3 in 1 oil on the shaft work the gear up and down. 99% of starter problems are a weak battery ( dead cell), dirty connections, solenoid, starter, and ground, both ends.. take them aparts and clean. looking at them ain't good enough. make sure the nuts on the battery are tight. does the new battery have a complete charge. and new batteries have been known to be bad.

you can also take a jumper cable directly from pos battery to large post on starter. careful it may start.

Is your "new" battery fully charged? The Bendix cannot rise if the starter does not spin fast enough or if those grooves are full of grease and grim.

And don't forget, corrossion of the cables and wires does not stop at the insulation.
Especially bad in a saltwater enviroment.
