starter problems

hey guys just a couple of question if anybody could help me i would appreciate it. my starter motor keeps only spins the flywheel half the time the ohter half it just slips off. And secondly i tried to start it the other day and instead of turnign over it just made a ticking noise??? Anyone know wat this is? thanks

After checking the battery and connections to be sure all is well, mine did that and it was the starter.
It would spin the engine some and then sit there and spin and not move the engine.

i just got a new battery thought that mite be causing the clicking noise and connections are all good. every time i start the boat i need to wind the starter cog onto the fly wheel to ensure that it grips.
