Just got a 1983 25hp electric start evinrude. I am restoring the 16ft aluminum boat that came with the engine. The problem I am having is the starter wont spin the engine very fast, however as soon as the plugs are removed of course it spins pretty well. Changed all the cables, cleaned the contact points. I am wondering if this is indicitive of the starter being weak or something else going on.

Re: starter problems

I have a 83 35 hp same starter...any ways mine did the same thing...i cleaned all all cables and contact areas..it did the same..I took starter apart and the brushes were worn..I changed them and its was as good as new.....and very simple to do...can of electric clener...1000 grit sand paper...

...sand the commutator where the brushes ride on litely..to just break off the crud glaze off....wash whole starer inside with the electrical cleaner to get all the carbon dust out..spray where u sanded also..

..put a small dab of lithium grease in the bottom bushing where the brushes mount..its in the center....clean the bendix splines also..add a drop or 2 of 3-1 oil.....assemble ..you can make a brush retainer tool from a putty knife...to hold the brushes down when you assemble it

search here for brush tool

this all takes 2 hours the first time doing it slow

ALSO make sure battery is fully charged and good before ...may be just the battery

Re: starter problems

Start with the battery to engine cables. Take off and clean all connections. Inspect each cable for corrosion.

Get battery load tested.
