hello,
I have a 1989 hurricane deck boat w/a1989 140 johnson outboard. I am sometimes having trouble w/my motor trying to turn over. Sometimes as soon as i turn the key, the motor tries to start up. the next time i turn the key the motor starts to drag but will eventually start the motor. i took the starter off and took it to a shop and they tested it and said it was good. but they also said the brushes could be going bad. i don't know whats making the motor drag like that when i try to start it. like i said it doesn't do it all the time. james johnson from crosby said it could still be the starter because when they tested the starter it wasn't under a load like it would be on a boat. does anyone think it could the starer selinoid? thanks for the help.

Re: starter problems?

If you have a voltmeter hook the voltmeterto the lead going to the starter and ground, crank it and see if the voltage is holding up. If so it is the starter. You should also make all connections at battery, Solenoid and starter are clean.

Jumper the battery cable to bypass the solenoid see if the problem still exists.

Re: starter problems?

I had the same problem on my boat, get a voltmeter and check your way back from starter to battery. Could be a voltage problem.

My problem was the batteries, it was losing power fast when boat is not in use. Battery is always disconnected by switch when not in use. Solution was to get a solar charger; been working fine ever since. And make sure all connections are TIGHT and CLEAN.
