I am looking at rebuilding my starter. Does anyone know if a rebuild kit is avaible and if so what the correct part number would be? ALso the number for the bendix. Hoping this will work as a new one is expensive.

Re: starter rebuild

You might be well ahead if you tell us why you think your starter needs to be rebuilt, Jeff.

Re: starter rebuild

THe gear that engages the flywheel won't disengage when the engine starts and the starter gets very hot and wont do anything but click until it cools down.

A lot of starters are replaced and/or fixed simply because the battery connections (engine end) were suspect.

Remove the battery ground and positive leads, from the engine and clean thooughly. Especially the negative lead on the engine block.

Very lightly lube the starter shaft with lithium grease.

agree. are you sure your ignition switch is not sticking in the start position, or the solenoid is not disengaging. the bendix, works on centrifical force. the starter has to be spinning for the bendix to stay up. when the flywheel turns faster than the starter, the bendix is suppose to down out. you could also have some burred teeth on the gears.

I do have a tooth on it that is almost gone and a few more that are a bit worn. I will try cleaning all the connections first real good and mabey replacing the soloniod since that is a cheap replacement and see what happens

DO NOT replace the solenoid with an automotive one. Use the OEM or a reputable marine aftermarket replacement. The broken tooth on the bendix does sound like you should replace it. Many starters need to be disassembled to remove the bendix. Check the BRP site parts diagram for your motor for available parts, if you are taking it apart for the bendix, new brushes are a no-brainer. If you have a starter/alternator repair shop in your area, they should be able to rebuild your starter much cheaper than a new one.
