I have a 1994 Force 40 HP (model# 40ELPT)

I have a new starter but I cant figure out how to get the old one out. There are 2 studs at the bottom, are those fastened in somehow?

It appears they are the same bolts that hold the entire starter unit together but I didn't want to unscrew them in fear of the starter falling apart on me.

Any ideas?

Re: Starter Replacement Help

Never done a starter on a 40HP before. Looks a little more complicated than my 125HP. Hope this helps.

1. Remove the two bolts that hold the starter bracket to the block. #21 in the diagram below.
2. Remove the bolt that holds the main wiring harness connector to the power head.
3. Remove the ignition switch box mounting screws and move it out of the way to expose the lower starter mounting bracket/bolts. #19 in the diag.
4. Remove the lower starter mounting bolt # 16, pull the starter away from the power head and remove the starter battery cable # 14 in diag..

Thanks for the info! I used the diagram you linked to and was able to see where the bolt was that held the bracket on the engine for the starter. I replaced the starter and had the same issue.

Ended up being a bad main ground wire.

All fixed and back in the water :)

Well at least you're back on the water. That was the goal!
