Starter solenoid and trim/tilt relay integrated?

I have a 1975 Johnson 135 with power trim/tilt. I am having issues with it not starting and tilt/trim not working at the same time, and it seems like buzzing trim and clicking start solenoid are comming from the same solenoid. Are they integrated, or does the trim just pick up positive from the solenoid?

I have a transplanted 77 V4 on my boat, and I just replaced the trim solenoid, which was totally separate from the motor. chances are fseventy the battery may be crapped out. hook a voltmeter to it and see what kind of voltage drop you get when you turn the key or engage the trim/tilt. mine may have utilized a terminal block originally but I wired mine it and it works.

there's bound to be someone else on here who can help you a little better than me so don't take my word for it

Re: Starter solenoid and trim/tilt relay integrated?

I knew I would ask a lot of ignorant questions until I get my manual. I dug around under the cover and found the starter solenoid, and I see the trim solenoid is mounted to the stern behind the battery.

I measure 12.6 volts at the battery, and 11.8 volts at the solenoid input terminal when the key is ON. Key engaged will only show 4 volts at the SMALL solenoid terminal, and 11.8 volts at the battery. Solenoid bad, or battery?

I still need to run power directly to starter to see if it will spin.

bad cable or connection
do a voltage drop test on all cables from the battery to the motor. no need to jump to the starter with a well planned method of trouble shooting.

Re: Starter solenoid and trim/tilt relay integrated?

Well... I pulled the battery out of my 70' Camaro and the trim/tilt worked like a champ and it started 1st try. I guess I have a bad battery.

This was just another case of intimidation by something new to me (never owned or messed with a boat ever). I have worked on cars since I was 11, (24 years now) and you would think I would fall back on my experience to troubleshoot this situation. Oh well, live and learn.. hopefully.

Thanks for the encouragement and knowledge.
