starter solenoid or starter?

i just wanted some input from some more experienced guys on this problem before i dive in and buy a starter. the engine wasnt turning over much so i thought the starter was seizing up. i checked the remote solenoid and had 12+ volts going in and 3-6 volts leaving to the starter. i then took the cable off that goes to the starter and checked the voltage, i had 12 entering the solenoid and 12 leaving. i figure that means the solenoid is good, am i right? the starter is old and rusty looking, i took it out and it doesnt look really messed up like i thought it would. what do you guys think? thanks

Have you checked the battery under load?

Without a load on the solenoid, measuring 12V there doesn't tell you anything. <br /><br />Is there another solenoid between your battery and the starter solenoid?<br /><br />What is the battery voltage while you are trying to crank?<br /><br />What is the voltage at the cable going into the solenoid while you crank?<br /><br />What is the voltage drop from the negative of the battery to the block? I assume you have checked all connections?<br /><br />When you say the starter doesn't look messed up, what do you mean by that? <br /><br />As the previous poster was saying, are you sure your battery is good and charged. You can take it to an aut repair place and they can load test it for you or pull a known good battery from a car and try it.

there is only one solenoid, a remote solenoid mounted a foot from the starter. it doesnt have a solenoid on the starter itself. when i try to crank the voltage reads 12ish from the positive cable attached to the solenoid. i havent checked the other things that you mention. i am going to check the voltages there and let you guys know. the battery is brand new so i think it is fine. when i say the starter doesnt look messed up i mean i was expecting it to be seized up. i am able to turn the teeth by hand and i hear stuff moving inside the motor itself. also all of the connections look fine.
