Starter Solenoid

I am rebuilding a '67 Mercruiser 165. Is it neccessary to have a slave solenoid for the starter or can I control the solenoid on the starter with the key switch? How much current does the starter solenoid draw? Is it too much for thr neutral safety switch to handle?

always a good idea to use a slave solenoid. The starter solenoid does draw substantial current...
