Starter Solenoid

I'll try and explain my problem. I just finished rewiring the engine and harness. Now I can jump the starter with jumper cables. But when the remote harness is hooked up and I turn the key I get nothing. When I test the switch leads to a ground on the motor I get 12 volts on all but one (this wire goes to one of the middle screws on the solenoid). Now on the solenoid I got 12v from the big red wire to a ground, but the two little screws in the middle I get nothing. The manual just say test for 12 volts??? Is my solenoid bad or I guess I should ask, how do I test it. I cannot jump the solenoid but I can jump the starter.. <br /><br />If needed its a 1968 65hp Evinrude model # 65853<br /><br />Thanks

Hi lyman if you jump power from the big red wire to the little post closest to it the selenoid should click and actuate starter motor. If nothing or just a click-click bad selenoid. The selenoid is just an electro-magentic switch, that turns power on and off to the starter. How are we doing with the ignit system? Did you get any spark yet?

Hi Alcan,<br /><br />No nothing at all to the first post so I guess I have a bad solenoid. As Far as the ing stuff, I am not sure yet. I am following the book testing no 1- and I got to test 3 and think my solenoid is bad. I am going to test some stuff Ron wants me to test. Just not sure if I understand until I get in there and try it. Now if my solenoid is bad will that stop me from testing the amplifier and spark?<br /><br />Thanks

Hi Lyman <br />No the selenoid won't stop you from the other tests, it may how ever make it less convienient. Do you have a remote test starter switch? They'er handy, and don't cost much. How is the seleniod on the other motor? It would be a good idea to oil your starter motor bearings a little. Both top and bottom.

I am going to pull the other one today and test it. I dont know what a remote starter switch is. Where do I get one? What does it do?<br /><br />Leon

The remote test switch is just a starter switch with clips and leads attached. You can get them at any auto parts house. They are used as a safer way to jump the starter senenoid. This saves time, frees up a hand and allows you to pay atten to the test you are performing. If I'am not mistaken 4-6 bucks ought to get one.

ok Thanks for the help Alcan,<br /><br />I went to autozone and my solenoid is the same as a 1968 ford pickup for $6.52. I got it put on and bammmmm the switch turned right over. Also while I was there i bought the stuff to make me a remote starter. spent $4.00 where they wanted 15.99 for one.<br /><br />Thanks Again, now that it is raining I will have to wait until a dry day to the rest of the tests.

Lyman man,<br /><br />Let me know how your tests go....How did you find the motor that you are working on? I just purchased a 1968 65hp Sport Four, model 65852 B, not sure what the difference is.......My motor hasn't been run in over two years and wasn't winterized...Have you replaced the Impeller yet?
