Good evening Guru's,

When I start my engine, the bendix comes up and hits the flywheel, but if it doesnt start right away, it falls back down and spins. When it is spinning, I have to wait for it to stop, or it spins again obviously. Could this be my brushes?

Also, I am getting a little frustrated, and was wondering, how much should a tune-up cost me?

200 HP 1983 J5854641, model# J200TLCTS

Thanks a million.

DM,

Lubricate the starter shaft. Do this by walking the starter gear up the shaft (KEY OFF) with your fingers. While doing this, spray the shaft with WD-40.

There are too many variables in what some people may descibe as a tune up. Get a manual (about $30) and do it yourself.

Thanks DJ, just got a manual yesterday. Think a fairly new guy to outboards like me can do it myself?

And would PB Blaster be better, or use WD?

I would use the recommended bedix lube. its a light grease. fluid film works ok. the starter drive is an inertia type drive. if the shaft is sticky it will have problems also if all the cable connections are not clean and tight it will have problems.
good luck and keep posting

You guys rock, sprayed some wd-40 in there, seems to be working fine.

I also put a little Carb cleaner in each and it seems to idling better already.

I am headed to BW this morning to get some carb cleaner. What do you guys think is better, Seafoam or something else.

thanks again,
Scuda
