Re: starter spins backwards, help!

... But then with all the theories his head is probably spinning (in the wrong direction).

This is an entertaining thread!

Not this thread needs any more answers, but I can't help but think that what's funny is that...well a couple of people alluded to it- the only way to look at the starter rotation and wonder if it works is if it was being bench-run in a vise or whatever.

Unless the gear isn't throwing into the engaged position properly, as also mentioned, I would bet that if the starter was installed and the connections were clean and the battery good the ol' Evinrude would turn over and start right up.

Re: starter spins backwards, help!

I hope this got fixed a long time ago, but the answer is that the permanent magnet part of the starter can and likely has been installed upside down effectively making north south and south north. When the power is applied to the windings in the armature, their polarity is correct and the armature has the proper polarity, hence the starter turns backwards. Take it apart, rotate the barrel end for end and everything will be fine!

Reviving a thread over a year old = Fail
Not reading the previous correct posts = Fail
Giving the wrong answer anyway = Priceless
