If for any reason that you had reversed polarity going to the mtr at one time you probably popped the reg/rect. When you get it running put a volt meter across the battery and see if it comes up to about 14 volts. If it does, you're okay

Re: Starter spins, but does not rise.

Ok, sorry. I'll clean the terminals, and check for corrosion.
Thanks for all the help.

Don't forget the grounds, both ends of all the cables, etc. If you know how to do a voltage drop test, then that may pinpoint where the problem is. Another thing, you might be able to detect the problem area by feel, because it may be hotter to the touch.

Am I understanding that the engine turns over with a direct jump from a DIFFERENT battery?

If so, load test the battery that you are having trouble with.

EDIT:

Look here for how to do a voltage drop test.

Yes, it turns over correctly with a direct jump from a booster battery kit.

OK then good luck with it. It is either a bad battery, corrosion on or inside cables, or a bad solenoid.

Re: Starter spins, but does not rise.

The battery sat for a year and a half with no activity. I would be pulling it and bringing it some place for a load test. A sulfated battery can be deceiving. It can show an acceptable voltage like it's charged, but the proof of it's health is the amount of amps it can throw out when load tested. If it isn't capable of producing enough amperage, the results are what you may be seeing now.

Re: Starter spins, but does not rise.

The hardware store did a load test. It failed miserably.
New battery. Motor started normally.
Thanks again for all the help. I never thought it was the battery because it appeared to charge and showed proper voltage.
