"Get a little dab of fresh grease and lube your shaft with it."

Bad idea. A few drops of very fine machine oil is best. Grease can actually cause the Bendix gear to stick.

I always use Singer sewing machine oil.

Hmm. I greased mine lightly. Think I should clean that off and hit it with some oil drops when spring rolls around like you suggested? Would 3-in-1 oil work? Just wondering why no grease?

Don't even consider a Battery leak down test. Think of the waste if you bought a new starter, and it was the battery all along. It would be foolish not to buy a new solinoid also, plus a key switch. Do not bend the battery cable's with a ohm meter connected. Just buy a set.

Hmmm. Ill have to think about this one a while:)

I have used 3 in 1 oil or light gun oil and it works fine.
Still a good idea to double check the connections and look for corrosion in the cables.

(Italics mine).

It would be foolish to replace anything that ain't broke and proven to be broke by systematic troubleshooting.

I got the feeling that's what's going to be done here. The starter don't work so what else could it possibley be?

Haven't you been paying attention? :) It could be cables, battery, solenoid, really anything that causes resistance. Come on admiral get with the program:p:D

Here read this and if you have any questions let me know!!!;)

Has the battery been load tested? Have you tested the solenoid, and cables for ohm's resistace? What was the cranking voltage across the starter? Now getting with the progam, what did I moiss?

Re: Starter spins but won't engage flywheel

An ohmmeter is useless to analyze high current circuits, RJ. The amount of resistance needed to disable a 12V 400A circuit is on the order of about 30 milliohms.

The voltage drop tests in "Outboard won't start" are the only way to discover that amount of resistance.

Re: Starter spins but won't engage flywheel

I grabed the wd-40 and sprayed it down and then it started everytime.

So it may be sticking down in there. I didn't take the time to test cables or anything yet

A few drops of very fine machine oil is best.

I think you should just oil it for now. If it doesn't solve the problem, do the starter circuit diagnostics.

Maybe it's time to put this thread to bed.

JB: Sorry , I did'nt mean to test the power circuit with a ohm meter. That would be the end of the meter right there. My meaning was to check for a break down of the unpowered circuit. The solinoid must be checked with a volt meter which would be part of the cranking test. This has to be a record discussion of a starting system.

It is amazing that so many people don't have a clue what a voltage drop test is or how to do it. Has anybody ever explained what it is and posted instructions on how to do it? I would, but don't want to duplicate somebody else's efforts.

How do I get rid of this thread anyways?

Re: Starter spins but won't engage flywheel

I'm glad you got your starter issue resolved and with just a couple of sprays with WD-40. I always put some oil on my starter bendix to be sure it's working up and down properly. There's lots and lots of little things like this to make operating a boat and motor more fun with less problems. Maybe you can buy a manual for your motor and study it and try to learn all you can about it. Good Luck!

I'm really glad you got your starter problem solved, and just a drop of oil on the Bendix. All the folks on this forum are very helpful. Lots and lots of little things to learn and know about operating a boat and motor. Maybe buy a motor manual and study up on all this stuff.
Good Luck!

I touched on the subject once here, but it could be expanded: http://forums.iboats.com/showpost.php?p=1606628&postcount=10

Excellent link -- Someone really should be consolidating these into a searchable database....

Yes, I vote the 'voltage drop test' go into the "top secret" folder
