starter spins freely no engage

i checked the manual they say if its spins freely and does not engage, lubricate it...did that and it still just spins.<br /><br />how does that gear thing comes out anyway ? is it magnetic or momentum ?.....thanks

Bigcash, The starter bendix is engaged through cetrifugal force and returns via spring load.The The pawl or follower needs to be target lubricated. Meaning, a drop of oil in the right place is better than two along side.A few light raps with a piece of wood or screwdriver hanle may break it free after oiling.You should be able to manipulate bendix by hand and get it to move toward flywheel.It may require removal and disassembly to free up ,depending on how stuck it is.Good luck.

If lube doesnt fix it, then check voltage to starter.

One of my V4s will spin a mile a minute but often will not engage the bendix unless the battery has a full charge or I switch the battery switch to both.

Two things,<br /><br />1) Make sure you have the polarity correct. A starter spinning backwards will not throw the bendix out.<br /><br />2) Remove the starter from the engine and pull the top off the bendix. See if you can easily slide the bendix up its length of travel. Sometimes the "lands" that it must travel will get a burr on them and lock it in place. New bendix's are not usually very much money.

All of the inline 6 Mercury's I have had when that happens all i have/had to do was turn the flywheel a little bit and then it engaged. I don't know what that has to do with it, but it has worked each and every time.<br /><br />Craig

ha ha you guys are gonna think i'm dumb...but after i disasembled to starter i installed the "case" with the magnet backwards flip floped so i guess it was spinning in the wrong direction
