It seems like I take a step forward and nevermind... I put a new spring on my old 25hp evinrude and now almost everytime I try to crank it the spring end somehow comes off the outer hinge in the recoil. What is causing this ? I spent an hour onm the river resetting the spring before I got goin again (lucky I had the tools with me!). Any suggestions? I also have a couple of leaks in my old aluminm should I caulk it or is the brazing the way to go? thank all!

I'm trying to figure out just what is happening fishfighter. I can't figure out your terminology.

Check the link below to the BRP site and click on engine diagrams. Follow the prompts and when you find your particular engine, take a look at the recoil starter parts breakdown and see if you can help us understand whats' going on with your spring.

http://www.evinrude.com/en-US/

ok the spring has 2 loops (1 on each end). the pins these loops go on are on the rewind starter assembly(outer spring) and the pulley (inner Spring loop). the end that is connected to the starter assembly is not breaking but somehow the loop actually comes over and off the pin. this happens as it is recoiling the rope. the spring is new and I have replaced it one time before with no problem.

I think you do not have enough rope on your pulley. It should be full of rope out to the edge.Otherwise when you pull the rope out,the force leaves the pulley, and goes to the spring.

DHP

yeah I looked and the pulley looks like it is only half full or so. Thats why my spring has been breaking and now its got to the point it just jumps ship so to speak. thanks for the help! this site is great. thanks

When you let go do you let the rope snap back? If so don't do that. Likewise, don't jerk the rope when starting. Take the slack out gently and when you feel the dogs grab and compression is felt, then give it a short but firm tug. As mentioned, if you don't have enough rope you may be pulling it to the end and stressing the spring. Make sure you haven't bent the pins.

I dont think the pins are bent much if any. I ordered the evinrude universal rope and handle from IBOats I guess they are 72" or can becut to size. The one I just pulled off my pulley was 66".
