I accidentally took the screw out of the top cover and released the starter spring. Does anyone have a procedure to get it back in it looks very difficult. Model is 2102a and it is a 1971. Any help appreciated.

Why would it look difficult ?----Why were you trying to remove the recoil / cowling ?

Everybody ( at least those who dont read manuals first) does that.

See the instructions here http://www.boatinfo.no/lib/evinrude/...rude.html#/552

It's marginally easier than getting an escaped tiger back into its cage....... at least you might get a severe mauling but it wont actually eat you

Take note of the safety precautions

Thanks VicS. That manual was handy had to download flashplayer 9 to read it. I wonder what will happen to it when Flashplayer is discontinued in December.
I used a piece of plywood with some finishing nails. I put the looped end over one and started winding. As it tightened up my wife put in additional nails until it was small enough. We then zip tied it and sat it in the housing and cut the ties while we held it in place. A extra set of hands was very useful. We let it slowly expand in the housing until it fit. Worked well with minimal loss of blood.
The manual is hilarious.."If the spring should accidentally be released..Such action would be a BAD SCENE, a very BAD SCENE..(both in bold print)...sounds very 70s. Lol
