Starter Switch Correct Wiring

I am having trouble with wiring a 5 lugged keyed starter switch to my 1958 Johnson 18hp.

Currently setup is:

Two black kill wires to MAG and GRD
White wire from starter to SOL
Power lead to BAT
Choke wire to ACC

The trouble I am having is the Starter kicks in when the switch is in the RUN position (and keeps on running), not when turned all the way to START.


Any thoughts?

The choke wire goes to the "c" terminal and is active when you push in on the key. The solenoid connection is on the "s" terminal. Are you sure you have the correct switch. The "A" terminal feeds gauges if you have them.

This is an old school set up with the separte Choke push button. No C the wiring options. I have it wired to ACC so that it is only hot when the key is turned on. It works fine. The Start and RUN positions seem to be inverted. Again in RUN the starter motor will keep on running, but when turned all the way to the right, i.e. START position it does not.

The five lugs again are BAT, MAG, GRD ACC, SOL.

Take the choke wire off the ACC terminal.

The Switch was bad!

I disconnected all wires from the switch, except for the power lead.
When I tested it with a meter, NO poles powered from the start position.
The SOL terminal was ONLY hot when the key was in the Run position.

Hate to have to buy another new switch, but glad my wiring was right.
Bought the goofy one on line over a year ago when getting my parts for the rehab.
Tough to return it at this point.

I guess beyond the solution to the immediate problem, I learned about buying parts to far ahead of when you will actually need them.
Year and a half return policy is hard to find.
