Pros,
I have been working hard to get mine and my father's boat ready for fishing season. Dad's mid 90s Johnson starter just spins and the gear doesn't come up at all to engage flywheel. His starting battery is less than 1 yr old and he charged it for 24 hrs (2 amp) before we tried to get the motor going. I can't even manually pull it up by hand.
My questions: 1. Should I be able to pull it up by hand?, 2. if i jump from car battery and it works, where should I start looking next for the issue as that would rule out starter and point to wiring/connections, right?, 3. would it ever be advisable for a rookie to take the nuts off the bendix shaft to inspect why I can't get the gear to come up?
Thanks,
