Videos like that can add a lot to helping people help you but the music does absolutely nothing to help. Thoroughly clean the shaft that the bendix rides up and down on and lightly lube it. You should be able to easily turn the bendix up and then it will drop back down on its own when you let go.

Well I'm sorry about the music, I didnt add it. I had the radio on sitting on the front bench when I was working and I didnt mean for it to block out the sounds of the motor. I'm going to assume the bendix is the thing that will engage into the flywheel..If so, I've tried lifting it up but that top blot it only move about a 1/8-1/4" Nothing too much and not anywhere close to engaging nor can I turn/spin it.

And another question,, are my throttles in the right spot for trying to start it? I'm sorry I'm still a noob and unsure about a lot of things. haha

I had this same problem.

i noticed it was getting stuck, but would pop up when i hit the starter housing with a heavy wrench. so i took out the plug wires (so the engine wouldn't start) then turned the key and hit it with a wrench while my buddy shot wd-40 inside the starter. it worked for a year and then i had to lube it up again.

You shouldn't be using those muffs on it. The mtr required a special flushing attachment that went on the water pick up underneath the anti-ventilation plate. You best bet is to put it a big barrel.

So I think my Bendix is the problem because I can only move it forward/towards the front of the boat about a 1/4" and it wont pull up..Is it supposed to spin up? Like should I try spinning it up?

inside the bendix(the gear that engages flywheel gear) is a spiral cut groove.the speed of starter motor spins it up into flywheel gear. when starter motor quits turning it dropps back down.taking it apart will explain everything, the shaft is dirty, rusted or worn. and you will notice bendix gear should spin freely by hand one way but not the other.bendix used to be available separately.try penitrating oil first

Yes, get a barrel so the water level is the same as when the boat is in the water and not running. Try some pb blaster but don't over do it.

Re: starter will not go up and engage flywheel - 63 johnson

Okay, so a bit of pb got it to engage, and now the flywheel turns. But it does not start. I can hear the exhaust pop out so I know somethings moving in there..but I really dont think all four of the cylinders are firing..My guess would be its only two. ANy suggestions on where to go know? plugs and wires? What should be my gaping be I'm sure its at .03 right now..if I remember correctly. And the wires are pretty crappy..but I dont know where to get knew ones..should I try the spark on the block trick?

Is this the screw I take out to lube the bendix?

& I know you said I needed a barrel, but my dad didnt listen to me and wanted me to take a video of it..I guess he had a bet with someone I could get it to run.

And thank you guys all for the help its been so great!

NO !! That screw holds one of the field coils in the starter. The bendix is on TOP of the starter and it's a gear. I would highly recommend that you get an OEM Factory Service manual if you are going to do the work yourself.

well I got a manual, and from looking my spark plugs I dont think either of the spark plugs on the left side of the boat are getting juice to them..I tried the spark test by self and did see and marking on the block where the spark wouldve jumped. I figured the test needed you too look for it sparking and not a mark but I figured it was worth a shot.

Re: starter will not go up and engage flywheel - 63 johnson

Well I ran into the Dave (the crack heads dad) and he said it used to run 5 years ago, before the Condenser went out.. (which a professional shop replaced) Also he said that it used to die on the water every once and a wile..but didnt say anything more than that. I dont know if that info will help at all but I thought I would just throw that out there.

Re: starter will not go up and engage flywheel - 63 johnson

I got one of those testers and tested it and found that I was getting little to no spark. So took off the ignition wires and distributor cap..and there is no doubt I I need new ignition wires and I was wondering If this is the kinda kit I would need..

And also how do i get the little metal nipple things out of the distributor cap? are they twist out or pull out?

Thanks for the help so far guys.

Well my dad wanted to him and I told him the old wires wist out. And well he twisted the stop and not the bottom.
Will this effect the spark adversely? You can clearly see the one that was twisted on.
