Good morning
The boat is a 1987 Bluefin
2.3 OMC
The starter won't disingage unless I pull the hot lead from the battery.
Cleaned and tightened all the cables and installed a new ignition switch.
It will try to start if the switch is in the off position. Can anyone help?

Re: starter won't disingage

sounds like the starter solenoid is stuck, or the ignition key switch is shorted and keeping it on.

with the key off, try and jump 12v to the starter solenoid, does it click on/off when you tap the 12v to it? If yes, take the 12v line off the solenoid (small wire) and see if the 12v goes on/off with the ignition switch. That will tell you which one is bad/stuck/shorted.

Thanks for the reply Todd
My starter is a marine type and I have taken the cover off to see the inner workings. This thing must have 2 lbs of copper under the cover.
From other postings I gather this motor may have a remote solinoid is this the one you are talking about?

Very similar. It has a band around the solinoid cover and the cover itself appears the same.

ok, then the solenoid is there, it's the little hump ontop. There has to be a smaller wire going to it, and the big fat wire(s) going to the starter motor. You care about the smaller wire for the above testing.

No small wire

The hot lead comes from a detached devise ( sometimes referred to as a remote solinoid. It has 2 smaller wires.

follow the large wire back.. it has to go to a relay then.

edit:. ok. that's where you start.

one of those two wires is the switched 12v. check with your vom. ign on/then off. (disconnected from solenoid)

It does, now to determine which wire test or both.

ya, disconnect them both.. try one wire (other lead of vom to ground). ign on/off. If nothing, use the other wire.

WRITE DOWN OR TAKE A PICTURE BEFORE YOU DISCONNECT

Can't test untill I figure out why the starter engages even if the ignition switch is disconnected

Re: starter won't disingage

if you disconnected the two little wires, and the started still engages, you found the problem.. the remote solenoid is bad.

Re: starter won't disingage

I doubt its from the wires that is engaging the solenoid. The solenoid is not pulling away when you remove power from it thus keeping power supplied to the starter. Take the starter off and lube the starter gear and shaft to make sure it slides freely.

He said the starter does disengage when he pulls the battery power. Hence, it isn't mechanically stuck.

Re: starter won't disingage

When he removes the power, it relieves tension between the gear and the flywheel and that is why it could finally pull back. If it was a stuck slave relay, it would continue starting once power was reapplied but the OP doesn't say this happens.

Not saying it couldn't be something else but this would be my guess.

Removed the starter and greased the shaft. Starter feels solid with no play in the shaft. With jumper wire attached to batt hot side and ignition ( purple wire ) Still engages. The other side is solinoid and touching the jumper produces nothing.

I should have said in my last response, This was the test of the assist solinoid. The purple wire ( Ignition ) yellow red is solinoid.

Re: starter won't disingage

After you removed the starter and greased the shaft, did you try the starter normally to see it still does the same thing?
