Re: starter won't stay engaged

I'm with ddaigle. If the motor will start using the manual choke, and it doesnt kick out or give you a problem otherwise. The choke is where I'd look. Pull the choke out and clean it, and retry.

forgot to say the choke was checked out also - when useing manual choke the starter is still not staying engaged but will start after 7 or 8 trys. the fly wheel is not holding the bendix in no matter what you do..

rthalls, are you using any warm up throttle while you are trying to start? On my merc 150 I have to advance the warm up all the way and hold the choke in until it fires. usually the first try. perhaps a weak spring on the bendix?

Re: starter won't stay engaged

Is it possible that the starter mounting bracket is bent or has previously been repaired. I'm thinking maybe the bendix is at a bit of an angle and when it engages flywheel it pushes itself down off the teeth (???). How's that for a wild guess. I just bought a 25 hp that the starter motor mount "repaired" but was put in way out of alignment. (bendix teeth did not contact flywheel at all) now's fixed.

Brent

Re: starter won't stay engaged

anything is possible sitting here in sc. Especially if the bolts are worn out from taking this starter on and off so much. From all the post I have read and all that I know. I'd be looking for another starter.

Brent your theory sounds like the way it is acting to me although there is no adjustment to the bracket , will look into it when I get time
would buy a new starter if I was sure that was the fix but reluctant to spend more money with out being sure .......

Re: starter won't stay engaged

every things checks out good-the starter is doing what its suppose to -its just the flywheel out runs the bendix... and once again with the foot on the center of the flywheel holding some pressure the bendix stays engaged just like it should .compresssion on each cyclinder is 120 which is good..
can someone with OMC check with them I don't think I am the only one to ever have this problem..

Id like to know, if you pull all the plugs and try and turn it over, will it stay ingaged? Or kill the ignition and try it with the plugs in. I bet it will. (but then I have made bad bets before). Im with some of the others, there is something else wrong with the starting of the engine,

no starter will not stay engaged with plugs out or with no spark with plugs in which sounds like starter but people who rebuilt starter says it will work on there motor ????

i think if they say it start and work on their motor, maybe they will trade theirs for yours. I've been curious about this ever since I first red the post. would love to know the answer for this when you get it.

Don't know that much about engines, but could excessive crank end-play allow flywheel move up and disengage bendix?
