I already know the answer to this but I thought I would try anyway. Im wondering if my starter is bad and needs replacement. The pinion is stuck in the flywheel and will not disengage. When i try starting it, the starter makes a weird squealing noise, and does not turn the flywheel. i can also see a little smoke coming from it. The starter is probably as old as the boat, which is a 1991. New starter needed Im guessing?

The pinion gear won't disengage after the engine starts? Squealing and smoke? = You're correct, or at least an internal inspection.

Re: Starter

The pinion should be push back by the spring or by gravity off the flywheel unless the spacer stopper was removed and not installed. You need to disengage the pinion first and see if it drops down to its original starting position. And then manually turn it up and see if it stops right at the flywheel gear. If the stop is missing or the spring is missing, there's a good chance the pinion will go above the flywheel and stay there. A picture will really help.

Under the bendix: A bit of grease on the worm gear might help?

Clean the starter and replace the brushes.

Re: Starter

I will try and get a picture this weekend. The pinion isnt stuck above the flywheel, the gears are still making contact with each other. Jerry, I did try some WD40 in there as before the pinion would get stuck and not pop up. This time, it doesnt seem to be fixing the problem. Im gonna try to take apart the entire starter and see whats going on in there. Does anyone know where a good schematic of the starter can be found?
