I believe these motors need to have a way to kill them, ground a wire through the key switch or kill switch.

just hit solenoid to turn over and start

Is it a pre mix or oil injected? you need to make sure it has oil needed and water for cooling.
Like I said just turning it over should start it, but you need to find a way to kill it before you start it up or you will be running around trying to figure it out while in a hurry.
