I am new to this. I got a rude 50hp , 1989. When I turn the ignigtion with the choke on it would not start until I remove the cover and turn that red tab switch, at the carb for a few second and then restart. It work then.
My question is what is that red tab switch, and how can I make my outboard start without having to manually turning that red tab?

Thanks, I love this engine so far and had a great time.

The red tab thing is most likely your solenoid primer, it is a type of choke that injects a small amount og gas into the carb this is controlled by your key switch on the remote.

turn your ignition key to on, push in on the key as this should be your primer switch also, count to ten let the key return outward to its normal position and then crank your engine.

the red thingy handle needs to be turned all the way clockwise until it stops, in this position fuel will only inject into your carb when the ignition key is pushed in.

If the solenoid primer stops woprking for any reason then you will turn the red thingy handle counter clockwise, squeeze your primer bulb and this will inject gas into your carb for priming/starting.

Hopefully I explained that correctly, if not go to the top of the main forum page and read the FAQ section omn how to start the engine.
