Is it ok to be using a deep cycle battery as my starting battery? I am aware of the difference between the two (deep cycle and starting). My motor takes a few cranks to get it started so I figured the longer discharge from a deep cycle would be a better idea. Am I on the right track here?

Re: Starting Battery

I used one until this year. It lasted 3 years from being brand new. I was in a bind, and it was all they had so i bought it. It served me well for 3 years though. I didnt maintain it very well in the winter, or it might have lasted longer.

Just check your cranking amps specs for your engine compared to what the battery will give out. Most deep cycle are not "real" deep cycles so I'm sure it's good.

Re: Starting Battery

Deep cycle batteries have soft lead plates and are made to put out low amperage loads for extended periods (several hours). Starting batteries have hard lead plates, and are made to put out high amperage for short periods(several minutes). Combination Deep Cycle and Starting batteies are a compromise.

A Marine Starting battery is what you want for longest life, as you are asking for a few minutes of high amperage.
