Hello- First off let me say that I am new to boating but am mechanically inclined. I have recently been given a boat with a Evinrude 40 HP motor that has an electric start, choke, and steering. MDL# 4015313, SER# J02636, which I think is a 1971, but not quite sure, which is my first issue. I have a manual but can't seem to figure out exactly which carburetor I'm working with from the pictures. I would like to do as much maintenance as I can myself, and want to know what type of maintenance I should look to do before I have to take it in to a shop. Also I tried to start it up, and fuel comes out of the carburetor, but it did start but only ran for 10 seconds or so. Can you give ma any suggestions on what issues I may be facing and what I should look to do.

Thanks

Welcome Dmoney

You will need to remove the carbs and clean them thoroughly. Also, use fresh gas and new fuel lines and primer bulb. 50:1 mix. Lower unit fluid will need changing, too. Water pump is a must. If you need exploded diagrams, you can go to the BRP website. Also, I would read this article about awakening a sleeping outboard. Good stuff for motors that have been idle for some time...

Awakening a sleeping outboard

BRP

If you have followed the above excellent advice, go to the Engine FAQs and do the troubleshooting in "Outboard wont start".

Good luck. :)
