On my 1986 28 SPL, when motor is cold it fires up with out even chocking. when I kill he motor after running and i start it back up within 1 minute it fires right up. If i wait 5 min it starts real slow and i need to bump the key about 3 times.

any ideas?

thanks

When's the last time the carb was cleaned and serviced? Normally you hit the choke when starting a cold mtr. Carb flooding slightly when pumping the primer bulb?

What exactly do you mean by starts real slow? Many starts or it starts but hard to keep running?
If bumping primer helps I doubt your flooded

when i try to start it it idles rough for a sec then dies. after the 3rd or 4th time it dont die and starts to idle up till it stays running normal.

i dont use the electric primer after its warm so i know i am not purposely flooding it.

If it starts real easy when cold with out using the primer (push the key in) then there's something wrong.

Us hats don't have it real cold but I definately we'd to use primer rather than have to keep using starter. As she starts to die just give a little bump. Sounds like a relationship. Lol

Its not really choking but rather forcing fuel directly into cyls when you activate primer solenoid. So yes if your having a rough start bumping it before it dies will help.
As to the source of your harder to start after running wot I'm at a loss but as I said mine does a similar thing. Starts faster if I've been ideling a long time rather that wot

pulled fuel pump apart and the diaphragm was hard with no flex to it. rebuilt it tonight. this could be why my plugs were staying wet.

i am taking the boat out tomorrow for testing. ( and fishing)

can someone explain to me what is the function of the diaphragm in the fuel pump?

PUlse pumps work on vacuum from motor using diaphragm to suck/push fuel

If it still runs I guess it's getting fuel by cyl vacuum
Hard starts would be a symptom if pump not working at very least
Where ya going fishin
