I have a 2005 mercruiser 5.0l engine serial number 0W319056. On my port side engine I have to move my shifter up and down slightly in order for the engine to start. Any suggestion in order to troubleshoot this problem.

Re: Starting issue

Im going to assume you have an Alpha drive. It appears that you momentary cut-off switch is out of adjustment. Could be an issue with the lower shift cable sticking slightly and causing the switch to stick. Could also be neutral saftey switch in the controls out of adjustment.

the only thing that controls that is the neutral safety switch. Probably loose or out of adjustment. It's located in your throttle/shift control. The shift interrupt switch has nothing to do with it.

Re: Starting issue

I have bravo 3 drives. Once I get the shifter in the exact spot the engine starts with no issues. Is the neutral safety switch something I can adjust or should it be replaced. where would it be located. Thanks

Right on Don. I re-read the problem. It can be adjusted. It sounds like it is working if you get it in the correct spot so the switch isn't bad.

Re: Starting issue

I have separate shift and throttle controls. I opened the shift control box up today but wasn't sure what I should be adjusting. I did clean up the electrical terminals and that seemed to make the problem go away. Is there something mechanical I can adjust also. Thanks.

Re: Starting issue

I also have seperate controls on my boat. On the shift lever there should be a small electric switch with 2 wires coming from it. It may have no adjustment. Switch could be getting worn or the detent on the control can get a little worn.
