starting issues

I have acquired a new to me boat with an 85hp evinrude motor. "late 80's model".

Here is my trouble: when turning the key to start, you hear the click of the solenoid but wont engage starter. It will engage eventually after you turn the key on and off several times. Other times it starts right away and then cuts out again. ( once the motor starts it keeps running, it doesn't cut out the motor) just cant get it to start every time.
I changed the starter and solenoid already as I had extra parts on hand and the same condition persists. I believe the problem is in the switch but not sure how to test it to be sure.
The switch is a push button choke and turn to start.
Hope someone can help with this, Thanks chuck

Re: starting issues

Check all the wiring and connections. They must be clean and tight. Look for signs of corrosion at the base of the lugs. They can corrode inside where you can't see it. If you know how to do a voltage drop test you can pinpoint the problem.

Re: starting issues

Have you had your battery load tested at a local parts house ??
