Starting Merc 200

My 1975 Merc 200 (20 HP) has remote electric start. If I wanted to start manually, (with the pull start) I would assume I need to put the key in the run mode. Do I need a battery or will it start and run without the battery?

You will need to put the key in the on position, or disconnect the wire harness from the engine.<br /><br />TMD

Hmmm...I am not 100% sure if the stator will be harmed if it is not allowed to charge.<br /><br />TMD

Even a dead battery is better than none at all!

Keep a battery on it at all times. Boat motors are funny like that, they are not like old cars.
