Well, we have run our mercruiser 255MIE on the ground twice now, both times we have had to have one guy playing with the throttle to get it going, then once its going we can slowly let off the throttle. The problem is in our boat we dont have idependant throttles(they are mixed with shift). I am wondering if a) the engine should be this way(maybe the mechanical choke needs adjustment) or B) if this is normal for starting a carbed engine, then how is it going to work in the boat? The boat has always had carbed engines, so it must have worked before.

1979 mercruiser 255MIE SN#4881081

here is a video of the latest run today.

Ayuh,...
I've never seen a controller that you can't push a button, or pull on something to Disengagethe Shifter, so you can use Just the Throttle....

Carbed motor most always need throttle motion to Start...

Post a picture of your shifter, I'm sure we can tell you how to get it into throttle only after seeing the control.

Put the shifter in neutral and pull the complete handle away from the control and move it forward for throttle only. When you come all the way back to neutral, it will automatically go back to throttle AND shift.
